S.L.A.M SYSTEMS INITIAL PROTOTYPE

Its Functions and operations

  • As the engineer enters any high risk areas, the long range RFID reader will automatically detect the device and acknowledge the engineer in the room.

  • It informs the ECR or the officer in charge through a Master controller that the engineer has entered the High risk area.

  • It actively tracks the location of the engineer within the high risk area.

  • A notification will alert the engineer every 10 mins to ensure that he is all right.

  • The engineer presses the acknowledgement button to signify that he is in good condition.

  • The device then informs the engine control room  or the officer in charge through the master controller that the user is all right.

  • Once the engineer has left the high risk space, the system will detect the engineer and inform the engine control room or the officer in charge that the engineer has left.

FINAL PROTOTYPE

Final prototype sketch

  • The sketch below shows the final prototype.

  • Minor changes were made, removing the cover for the S.O.S button in favor for a 2 step operation.

  • Data port and charging port is combined.

  • Hooks is placed at the back of the device to allow the engineer to attach the device to the arm.

  • Functions remain the same as the initial prototype.

NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FUNCTION

  • A notification will be sent to the device every 10 mins to verify his status.

  • The device will alert and vibrate for another additional  5 mins if the engineer fails to press the acknowledgement button.

  • The device will then send an alarm to  the engine control room or to  the officer in charge via the master control.

  • The officer in charge then will sent a rescuer to verify the status of the engineer.

FALL DETECTION FUNCTION

  • Operates as named, will detect fall of personnel at any time

  • Once a fall is detected, a prompt will show up with a countdown timer of 5 mins

  • Once the prompt shows up, there is an option to press the button to acknowledge you are fine

  • If within the time limit that personnel does not respond to the fall prompt, the device will automatically send  a S.O.S or emergency signal to the first response personnel (most likely captain or safety officer onboard) via the master console.

  • The device then informs the first response personnel of the incapacitated engineer location within the High risk area.

S.O.S FUNCTION

  • There is a button on the device which functions as the S.O.S button

  • When the button is pressed, the device immediately sends an alarm to the master control at the engine control room/Bridge.

  • Officer in charge can then take action appropriately.

  • It is a 2 step operation, requiring the user to press the button a second time after a prompt to prevent false alarm.

IN AN EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY

  • In the event the engineer does not respond to the Fall Detection Alert, Acknowledgement or if the S.O.S button is activated, the device will then alert the master controller at the engine control room and the  officer in charge will be notified.

  • The location of the casualty will be notified to the rescuer.

  • The device immediately displays the basic medical information of the incapacitated crew member when any of the emergency functions has been activated.

  • When the casualty is discovered, the rescuer can check his device for basic medical information on the casualty.

It can be used in:

  • A breakout of fire in the engine room can be immediately notified to the safety officer right before a activation of a fire alarm to give first and immediate notice or in-case of man overboard, it can be used too.

  • When there is an accident happening.

  • Can be used when a casualty has been found.

  • After the S.O.S signal is issued, actions can be immediately taken.

  • To prevent a false alarm, a prompt is issued to the user to press the button one more time to confirm the emergency for the S.O.S relay.

HOW WE ARE HELPING SEAFARERS AND OTHERS ALIKE

  • The S.L.A.M  system focuses on the safety of all crew members.

  • Measures time inside high risk area and the active condition of crew.

  • It monitors the condition of the crew.

  • Ensures safety by active communication from crew member to safety officer.

  • Information relayed from S.L.A.M device to safety officer will be recorded and absence of communication relayed back will lead to emergency call for help to crew member or check for his/her safety.

  • S.L.A.M system is applicable to all vessels present and as to the future as well as crew size are on a decline in the future.

  • It allows increases the chance of survival through early warning.

  • With location tracking on each high risk areas , we can identify number of crew in areas and monitor safety and react to any emergency efficiently and quickly.

  • This would increase awareness of safety, ease of crew members for report of safety, efficiency of reaction to emergencies.
